In the musical we first meet Fantine during 'At The End of the Day' where one of the other workers discovers that Fantine has a child born out of wedlock. They see Fantine as a threat and claim that Fantine has been sleeping around (which isn't true). This makes the foreman jealous and he fires her.

She sings her big solo number (I Dreamed a Dream) in which she tells her story of how she gave her love to a man who betrayed her.

She walks around the town and sells her locket and her hair to be able to send money to the Thenardiers, the couple who has taken Cosette in their "care". Eventually she has nothing else to sell but her body. (Lovely Ladies). Meanwhile she seems to have developed a serious cough. When she is harrassed by a dandy named Bamatabois, she claws up to his face and draws blood to protect herself from him. Bamatabois calls the police who take Fantine to prison.(Fantine's Arrest) There she is helped by monsieur Le Mayor (Jean Valjean) who demands that she is taken to hospital instead.

There she had delusions of Cosette and crawls over the floor towards the imaginary Cosette. Jean Valjean lifts her and puts her back to bed, telling her that Cosette will be fine in his care. She thanks him and begs him to stay with her until she is asleep. She dies with him at her side, knowing that Cosette will be safe. (Come to me).

When it is Jean Valjean's turn to die, she comes and takes him to Heaven caringly. (Finale).
